IT WAS like animals to a waterhole when a Gravesend butcher served up a wild card of exotic meats.

A heard of experimental shoppers gathered around JM Danslow, in Windmill Street, for a free taster session of some unusual steaks.

With a new range that sounds more like the inhabitants of the local zoo than a butcher’s shop, JM Danslow is bringing a bit of bush tucker to the dining tables of Gravesham - in the form of buffalo, reindeer, camel, ostrich, kangaroo, crocodile and even zebra.

Served up hot, dozens of shoppers were able to try each of the meats - some of which have been imported all the way from the plains of South Africa, Australian outback and Swedish slopes.

Owner Trevor Payne was pleased with the response.

Claiming to have the answer to a boring barbecue and unhealthy diets the 47-year-old is keen for people to eat more game.

Mr Payne said: “It went very well. We had at least 50 people come over who were all keen to try it. The most popular was the kangaroo but buffalo is my favourite.

“We are just working on healthy eating options. These meats are low in fat, low in cholesterol and high in protein, which is important when it comes to a healthy diet.”

For more information on the selection of game, visit the Windmill Street butcher or call 01474 352 641.
