Ebbsfleet United came from behind to draw 1-1 with Wrexham in Blue Square Bet Premier on Saturday but they missed a late penalty and the chance to snatch all three points.

Moses Ashikodi had his spot-kick saved by Joslain Mayebi, who had earlier gifted the Fleet a bizarre equaliser.

When Neil Ashton headed the ball back towards his goalkeeper, there appeared to be no danger. But Mayebi inexplicably dropped the ball at the feet of Liam Enver-Marum, who hooked a shot over his shoulder and into the net, cancelling out Johnny Hunt’s earlier strike.

A goalless first half contained chances for both sides. Nathan Elder shovelled two shots wide early on, before Robert Ogleby and Dean Keates went close for the visitors. Ebbsfleet thought they had taken the lead when Ashikodi turned home Tom Phipp’s cross but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Four minutes into the second half, the Dragons broke the deadlock when Hunt powered a shot beyond Preston Edwards from 12 yards.

Back came Ebbsfleet. After Phipp’s shot had been blocked at the near post, Mayebi’s moment of madness gifted Enver-Marum his goal, although the goalkeeper went on to redeem himself.

A bouncing ball clearly struck Ashton on the arm, although the defender appeared to be just outside the box. Wrexham will feel Ashikodi’s penalty miss exercised justice.
