Enforcement action to be taken to move travellers

ENFORCEMENT action may be taken to turf travellers off a Gravesham beauty spot after a planning application to stay indefinitely was refused.

Yesterday evening members of Gravesham Borough Council's regulatory board unanimously denied permission for eight families to stay on the greenfield site in White Post Lane, Sole Street.

In 2006, the council won a 16-month legal battle, giving the travellers until October 2008 to leave the spot near Cobham.

Land in Springhead Road, Northfleet, which is home to the Gravesend Royal Naval Association, has been offered to the travellers as an alternative site, but they have not accepted it.

After hearing the concerns from one concerned Cobham resident the board upheld the recommendation to refuse the planning application and for authorised enforcement action to be persued.
