Graffiti and telescope stolen from new £39k play park equipment in Hever Farm Recreation Area, Singlewell, Gravesend

New play equipment worth tens of thousands of pounds has been vandalised only a few weeks after it was installed.

The play park in Hever Farm Recreation Area, Singlewell, near Gravesend, was refurbished with the addition of a climbing frame and swing set by Gravesham council.

Residents believe the area was only open for two weeks before it was covered in red graffiti and had its telescope feature stolen.

The older climbing frame’s tunnel has also had explicit drawings painted inside it and looked as if it had been burnt – although it is not known if this was there before the new area was installed.

Nearby resident Daniel Paul Brown said: “Every time new play equipment is put in it becomes a target for vandalism it seems.

“Kids are bored and unfortunately have no respect for things nowadays. It seems to be getting worse.

“Cameras will not do nothing, they will cost money and just get vandalised. More police presence would be good but they are massively understaffed and over worked as it is.”

The new equipment was installed into the park, off Winters Croft, at the request of residents and cost the council around £39,000.

Gravesham council’s cabinet member for operational services, Cllr Emma Morley, said: “It is incredibly disappointing that the equipment at Hever Farm has been abused in this way.

“The play area was extended and extra equipment installed at the request of local residents, and I know young children from around the area love the park.

“I hope those responsible understand that they are simply damaging something that is loved and used by their own friends, neighbours and possibly even family. It is incredibly selfish and unnecessary.”

Council officers have since been out and removed the graffiti.
