Northfleet fire: Gravesham council confirms residents of Rose Street are in new homes

New homes have been found for the residents who were made homeless after a blaze.

Six properties in Rose Street, Northfleet, were severely damaged in the fire on Monday (August 21) evening, three of which were owned by Gravesham council.

The local authority confirmed it helped residents who needed it find emergency temporary accommodation but it has now said everyone has been found longer-term homes to stay in.

Cabinet member for housing services Cllr Jenny Wallace said: “This week’s fire was traumatic and devastating for everyone involved, and we are grateful that nobody was hurt.

“While we were able to find short-term emergency accommodation for those families who needed it on Monday night, we knew those solutions were not ideal.

“Officers have worked hard to identify homes for those who need them, where they can start to rebuild their lives, and I am happy to say all those families are now settling into their new homes.

“We will continue to give them all the help and support they need at this difficult time.”

No decision has yet been made on the future of the properties in Rose Street, with damage assessments and surveys under way.

Firefighters spent eight hours tackling the flames earlier this week as the fire, which started in one home, spread one by one along the row of terraced houses.

At the height of the fire, 10 engines, a height vehicle, and a command support unit were at the scene. The flames were out by 1am but crews did not leave until 2.50pm on Tuesday (August 22).

Speaking to KentOnline earlier this week, residents told of the moment they knew their homes were on fire whilst smoke was seen billowing across the town.

The cause is believed to be accidental, but investigations are still ongoing.

The council’s housing team is also helping to coordinate community support and donations for those affected by the fire.

Cllr Wallace added: “Our wonderful Gravesham community has really rallied around the families, and generous donations of clothes, children’s toys, and other essentials are coming in all the time.

“Our housing team is in touch with all the families and has an understanding of what is needed and by whom, so I would ask anyone looking to contribute their own support to contact the team by emailing neighbourhoods@gravesham.gov.uk and we can make sure donations get to where they are needed the most.

“I can only thank all those who have donated items so far. The families truly appreciate your generosity.”
