Ebbsfleet United defender Anthony Acheampong takes responsibility for the freak own goal at Truro City

Anthony Acheampong took full responsibility for the freak own goal Ebbsfleet conceded at Turo on Saturday.

Fleet goalkeeper Brandon Hall missed Acheampong's backpass and the ball tricked into his net to put the White Tigers ahead just before half-time.

But the defender admitted it was his error.

Acheampong said: "I hold my hands up and I take full responsibility for the own-goal.

"I know as a defender, playing it back it’s always got to be outside of the goal. The wind did not help me, playing it back into the goal and unfortunately it bobbled over the keeper’s foot and went in.

"I know I shouldn’t even be passing the ball back to him there. It’s a mistake on my part, it’s nothing to do with him.

"He’s been tremendous, I wouldn’t want to say it’s his fault. I take full responsibility."

Acheampong redeemed himself by scoring Ebbsfleet's equaliser in the second half, preserving their unbeaten record away from home in National League South as the game finished 1-1.

He said: "It wasn’t because I had scored an own goal in the first half that I was happy, it was more because I wanted to help the team out and I was glad that it brought us back into the game.

"It was my first goal of the season and I was happy to score but there are many more to come.

"The manager does want more goals from me. He does tell me. He’s not shy in reminding me that he wants more goals from me. I’m pleased to get that for him and the team.”

He added: "It was very hard to play on, it was very soft, it was windy, the ball was spiralling.

"It was very hard to play out there but I’m glad we dug in and we’re happy with a point."
