Fleet shine in front of the cameras

OPENING GOAL: Liam Coleman
OPENING GOAL: Liam Coleman

Grays Athletic 0 Gravesend & Northfleet 2

GRAVESEND moved into third place with an impressive victory at Grays in front of the Sky TV cameras on Wednesday night.

The Fleet scored at the end of either half to confirm their play-off credentials in dreadful conditions.

Played in heavy rain and strong winds, which favoured the home side in the first half, the Fleet produced a rearguard action before gaining a foothold in the game.

Liam Daish's side went ahead five minutes before half-time when Charlie MacDonald and Luke Moore combined to set up Liam Coleman, who turned inside the box and fired beyond keeper Ashley Bayes.

Gravesend were rarely troubled in the second half and could have extended their lead but for an offside flag which robbed Coleman of a second goal.

However, their superiority was confirmed in stoppage time when substitute Onome Sodje raced clear. His shot came back off the post and fell to MacDonald, who bundled home his 14th goal of the season.

Gravesend: Cronin, R Smith, McCarthy (J Smith 46), Hawkins, Slatter, Quinn, Long, Coleman (DeBolla 82), Opinel, MacDonald, Moore (Sodje 88).
Subs not used: Mott, Purcell.
Attendance: 1,071.
