Water supply to homes across Herne Bay is being re-routed following two bursts to a 12-inch main this afternoon.

People living near the leak report their water has turned brown and are questioning whether it is safe to drink.

Traffic is built up in the east of the town following the incident in Mickleburgh Hill.

Workers from South East Water have had to shut off the road as water gushes down the street.

Traffic was stopped from entering Mickleburgh Hill at the Canterbury Road roundabout and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.

Repairs are underway and it is anticipated the large pipe will be fixed overnight.

South East Water says it is re-routing its supply around other pipes in the network to ensure tap water supplies are not affected.

The firm's regional network manager, David Winterburn, said: "Residents and businesses within Herne Bay should not be affected by these bursts and continue to receive tap water supplies.

“We will be re-routing water around our network of underground pipes to ensure the community continues to receive tap water supplies while the repairs take place."
