Wetherspoon reinstates door staff at Herne Bay pub after attack

Herne Bay’s Wetherspoon pub has reinstated its door security staff after a customer was stabbed with a bottle.

The injured man was airlifted to a London hospital following the attack at the Saxon Shore at about 11.30pm on Friday, March 1.

No door supervisors were working at the time, having been stood down in September after the summer season.

But the pub chain moved quickly to bring them back in following the weekend violence, which left a man in his 20s with serious injuries.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “They were taken out for the winter back at the end of September.

“Door staff have been brought back in from last Saturday, following the incident, and will be back in going forward.”

Town centre councillor Joe Howes hopes the incident will be a “wake-up call” for the pub chain.

“Now that we’re getting towards the summer, it should have door staff,” he said.

“They would be able to prevent people who are drunk from going in, which we know is an issue, and they would be able to stop trouble from happening.”

The injured man was flown to London at about 12.30am by the air ambulance, which landed in the Memorial Park. He was later discharged.

Mr Gershon said a fight broke out inside the pub before it continued into the garden, “where a customer was attacked with a bottle”.

He added: “The pub was closed immediately and the police and ambulance attended.

“We send our best wishes to the customer involved and trust he’ll make a speedy recovery.”

A 24-year-old man from Gillingham and 26-year-old man from Canterbury were arrested in connection with the incident.

They were later released but remain under investigation.
