Beware of data protection racket

BUSINESSES are being warned about companies charging over the odds to register for data protection.

It should only cost £35 to register for data protection, but some companies are offering to help - and charging more than £100.

Linda Bennett, of Business Link Kent, said: "We have received a copy of a letter from a firm saying unless you register for data protection you are breaking the law. Send us £95 plus VAT to register, or else.'

"The fact is, companies can register themselves online with the Data Protection Registry or call and get a form - it cost a princely £35, about a third of what these companies are trying to charge."
