Rock guitarist and business leader Professor David Maguire is to replace Baroness Blackstone as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Greenwich.

He is currently Pro Vice-Chancellor (Corporate Development) at Birmingham City University.

In his new role, Prof Maguire will lead a university with 2,000 staff, three campuses, including Chatham Maritime, and a large network of local and international partnerships. It has 28,000 students.

Sir Stuart Etherington, Chairman of the University Court said: "We were looking for an enthusiastic, visionary and visible leader, with an entrepreneurial approach and I am delighted to say that we have found an outstanding candidate in David."

Prof Maguire said: "I am thrilled to be joining Greenwich because it represents everything that's good about UK higher education. It is built on strong foundations, with a long-standing history; it has excellent staff and a diverse student body; and it has a forward-thinking board and leadership team, with bold ambitions for the future."

Married with a daughter, he enjoys sport, including a regular game of squash and plays electric guitar in a rock band.

Baroness Blackstone retires from the university in September after seven years as Vice-Chancellor.
