Recycling teach-in for professor

UNIVERSITY of Kent vice chancellor Prof David Melville has been shown how newsprint is recycled.

Prof Melville, who heads the University of Kent at Medway and Bridge Wardens' College, based in Chatham Historic Dockyard, was given a guided tour of Aylesford Newsprint, the UK's largest newsprint recycling plant.

Company secretary Donald Charlesworth explained the recycling process to Prof Melville, who was accompanied by Jeff Brown, the University of Kent at Medway's operational director, and engineer Solveig Eriksson, an environmental manager with Aylesford's joint parent company SCA Graphics Sundsvall AB.

The tour was part of the vice chancellor's programme of visits to key employers in the county.
