THE largest gathering in the South East business calendar has a new sponsor.

CBI South East has enlisted the support of leading bank HSBC as sponsor for its annual dinner at the Copthorne Hotel Effingham Park on June 9.

Nigel Bourne, director for CBI South East, said, "We welcome HSBC’s involvement and very much look forward to working with them on this highly prestigious event, which brings together more than 500 business leaders."

Ian Legg, area director for HSBC in Kent, said: "HSBC is committed to supporting businesses in the South East, which is why in 2004 we opened 55 new commercial centres and added a further three new corporate banking centres to the two already in existence in the region.

"HSBC and the CBI share a common commitment to driving forward the region’s economy. We hope the dinner will provide 500 of the region’s businessmen and women an opportunity to network, and benefit from the knowledge and experiences of the two first class speakers."

This year’s event welcomes Dr DeAnne Julius CBE, chair of the Royal Institute of International Affairs and a founder member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, as guest speaker.

Dr Julius is also a director of BP, Lloyds TSB, Serco and Roche and serves as vice-president of the Society of Business Economists.

The evening’s other speaker is author, presenter and former MP Gyles Brandreth who will provide a more informal end to the evening.

HSBC takes over the mantle as main sponsor from PricewaterhouseCoopers, which has sponsored the dinner for the past four years.

Mr Bourne added: "PricewaterhouseCoopers’ highly active involvement in our other South East regional activities is an excellent example of their continuing business commitment to the whole region."
