Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler admitted Saturday’s performance against Aldershot wasn’t the best but was only concerned with the three points.

In a game of few chances the Gills took theirs with Cody McDonald hitting two in the victory.

Hessenthaler said: “I felt we looked a bit fatigued late on in the game but fortunately for us we have a striker bang in form.

“There were no chances first half but two chances in the second half that were created and we had a striker that knows where the net is. That’s fantastic news for us.

“I’m disappointed we conceded late on even though it was a fantastic strike, but it’s about winning games.

“We were fantastic midweek against Chesterfield (on Tuesday) and had 21 shots at goal but didn’t score. This game wasn’t pretty and it wasn’t one of our best performances but I go away happy. It’s about three points at the end of the day.

“We looked a bit leggy and fortunately for us time ran out when they scored their goal. The boys dug in and it was a good three points - they ground out a result.”
