Appeal for witnesses after pensioner dies in road crash

Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision at Island Road, Hersden on Thursday (June 30).

A white Ford Transit panel van, black Vauxhall Vivaro minibus and a white Ford Transit flatbed van, collided at 2.45pm at the junction with Oaklands Way.

Senior investigating officer PC Glen Braidwood of the Kent Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “The Ford Transit panel van was travelling along Island Road towards Canterbury when the collision happened.

"At this stage we believe it collided with the back of the Vauxhall Vivaro before travelling across the carriageway into the path of the Ford Transit flatbed, which was travelling in the opposite direction.”

The driver of the Ford Transit panel van, a 79-year-old man from London, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A female passenger in this van received minor injuries.

The driver of the Vauxhall Vivaro, a 51-year-old Canterbury man, and the driver of the Ford Transit flatbed, a 41-year-old Canterbury man, also received minor injuries.

The road was closed for four hours while the vehicles were recovered and the collision was investigated.
