A MAJOR seascape sculpture has pride of place at Kent railway station.

The six foot tall metal sculpture, simply titled The Sea, is on display outside Margate train station and was created as part of Thanet Coast Project’s SeaART 2007 exhibition,.

Createdin workshops at the Margate Community Pharmacy Gallery, it was designed and created by local artist Ian De Silva, with help from young people between the ages of 14 and 24, many of whom were also from the youth offending team.

The sculpture, depicting marine life swimming through the sea, has a poem describing the sea on the back of it.

It has been placed at the entrance of the station for visitors to Margate to see. Thanet Coast Project education officer Naomi Biggs said: "This was a great project, bringing together so many different people and organisations.

"It was wonderful to be able to work with each other on such a creative project, particularly as it has been such a positive community piece for Margate.

"It is now the first thing that people will see as they come into the town by train and helps to highlight the changing face of Margate."

The initial workshops were funded by the Safer Stronger Communities Fund.
