A lorry driver from Ashford who died after crashing into a row of parked cars has been named.

Roger Smith, 52, Eastmead Trading Estate, died yesterday morning.

The accident - involving the heavy goods vehicle, a camper van and several cars - happened in Brighton.

Sussex Police said he was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, but later died from his injuries.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place next week.

A wall in front of terraced houses in Queen's Park Road and a section of the gas mains were damaged in the collision.

Police cordoned off part of the road and evacuated the residents of six houses as a precaution.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and the gas board attended and police assisted with the evacuation of six houses in the interest of public safety.

"Residents are now able to return to their homes, but a road closure remains in place."
