Welling missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of Blue Square Bet South on Tuesday night when they slipped to defeat at Bath.

Sekani Simpson scored the only goal for Bath, who came into the game without a win in their previous five outings. The result ended Welling’s four-game unbeaten run but they remain six points clear of second-placed Salisbury with eight games remaining.

The home side went close through Elliot Chamberlain before the Wings missed a golden opportunity to open the scoring. Kiernan Hughes-Mason squared for Ross Lafayette but the striker was unable to apply the vital touch.

Bath grew into the game and they struck on 36 minutes. Noah Keats and Joe Burnell combined to set up Simpson, who rounded keeper Jamie Turner – playing in place of the injured Sam Mott.

Turner saved from Chamberlain and Adam Connolly as Bath continued to set the agenda after the break. Welling’s disappointing night got worse, three minutes from time, when substitute Giannoulis Fakinos (pictured) was sent off for a foul on Keats.

The Wings make the long trip west to face basement club Truro City on Saturday.
