ONE of the most popular personalities of the Kent beach scene has died after a year-long battle with cancer.

Marilyn Beugg, who ran the trampolines at Viking Bay in Broadstairs for more than 30 years, passed away in the Pilgrims Hospice aged 63.

A former Miss Broadstairs of 1967 and a mother-of-three, she started working on the beach when her three daughters, Christina, Victoria and Alexandra, were young.

She was popular with generations of families whose children used the trampolines, both local and visitors to the town.

Later her husband, Ricky, left the building trade to join her on the beach and expand business into Kiddies Corner, with more rides and play equipment.

Mrs Beugg, who lived in Bradstow Way, came to Thanet from Manchester in the early 1960s and worked as a waitress and a dental nurse before starting the beach business.

Her husbands said: “She was so well-known from the trampolines and over the years met generations of families and their children.

“She was also a mother figure to many of the young people who regularly visit Viking Bay and always had a word of advice for them if they needed it.

“Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with a tumour last year and despite treatment, she became increasingly ill.

“But I cannot praise and thank the staff at the hospice enough for the care and kindness they showed both Marilyn and our family.”

Mrs Beuug had four grandchildren, and was a talented cook.

Her funeral service is at 11am on Friday at Holy Trinity Church, Broadstairs, followed by a cremation at Thanet Crematorium. All are invited.

Anyone wishing to send flowers can do so via funeral directors, Blackburns of 7 Buckingham Road, Broadstairs, on 01843 867667 and donations to the Pilgrims Hospice are also welcome.
