Transfer-listed striker Ben Strevens struck twice for Gillingham in a practice match on Tuesday afternoon.

The Gills were in action against League 1 Colchester United – watched by manager and former Gills favourite Joe Dunne – and only lost to a late deflected effort.

Both managers fielded strong teams for the match at Beechings Cross, with Strevens one of many experienced Gills players in the team.

Also starting the match were Danny Jackman, Charlie Lee, recently signed Steven Gregory and Charlie Allen – who made up the four-man midfield.

Fellow first team squad players Callum Davies and keeper Tommy Forecast also started.

Colchester struck twice in the opening 11 minutes, only for Strevens to pounce twice. His second goal left the United team arguing among themselves as he left the defender for dead before calmly tucking the ball over the visiting keeper.

But United claimed the win, as Tosin Olufemi’s effort crept in, courtesy of a deflection.
