Bid to trace dead man's relatives

POLICE have issued an urgent appeal in an attempt to trace the family of a man who collapsed and died outside Gillingham railway station.

Allan John Chadwick, 53, of Chelmar Road, Chatham, died in the early hours of Saturday morning.

So far, police have not been able to contact any relatives and were only able to identify him thanks to his acquaintances.

A police spokesman said: "We know that Mr Chadwick lived in the Medway area all his life and was married and divorced.

“But we have been unable to trace family connections and we would appeal to anyone who knew him and can advise us about any family members to contact us."

Mr Chadwick got off a train at Gillingham station. He appeared disorientated and police were called.

Officers were escorting him from the station when he collapsed at about 1.30am and died. As in all cases where a death occurs in the presence of police officers, the Police Complaints Authority has been notified.

A post mortem examination carried out on Tuesday revealed that Mr Chadwick died from pneumonia.

Anyone who can provide any information about Mr Chadwick's family is urged to contact Kent Police on 01622 690690 and ask for Det Insp Mick Costello.
