A father who blasted a man with a shotgun in a confrontation between travellers a judge compared to the Wild West has been jailed for five years.

Billy Gappy Smith (pictured left) was sentenced to three years for possessing a firearm when prohibited and two years consecutive for inflicting grievous bodily harm on Alfie Harber.

The 46-year-old, of Hillhouse Road, Stone, admitted the charges after denying causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

His son Billy Nelson Smith, 24, (pictured below left) of Moorhen Walk, Greenhithe, was jailed for three months for common assault on Mr Harber's 17-year-old son Alfie involving a Samurai sword.

Because of time spent on remand, he was released immediately.

Billy Gappy Smith had been recalled to serve the remainder of a seven-and-a-half year sentence imposed in 2008 for conspiracy to defraud, the release date from which is 2015.

Maidstone Crown Court heard Smith peppered Mr Harber, 50, with shotgun pellets after the victim, his son and others went to Billy Nelson Smith's Greenhithe home on August 1 for a "straightener" – a fight.

Mr Harber was wounded in his abdomen and injured a finger. He still has pellets in his body.

Judge Philip Statman said residents of the respectable area saw the mob advance on the Smiths.

"What they couldn't believe is what happened next, which seems to resemble something out of a Wild West film," he added.
