One of the most prized homes in the county, the Bishop's Palace in Rochester Cathedral Precinct, is for sale with Strutt & Parker for £1.1million.

The Palace was built some time after 1400. St John Fisher lived there for 30 years and was often visited by Sir Thomas Moore and Cardinal Wolsey, as well as Erasmus, scholar and friend of King Henry VIII. The King of Denmark also stayed there in 1640.

The building was converted into a comfortable home in the 18th and 19th centuries when a wing was added to provide a substantial drawing room.

The property itself, with its beautiful Roman walls surrounding two large walled gardens, has been the subject of restoration and redecoration, giving future owners comfort that little money will need to be spent in the coming years.

In all there are six bedrooms, two bathrooms, wet room, hall, drawing room, lounge, library, study, kitchen, conservatory-style breakfast room, wine cellar, garage and private parking.

There are two front doors, one set in the high Roman wall opposite the castle, and the other opposite the cathedral, approached from the front garden. The former leads into a long reception hall with a well-fitted kitchen/breakfast room to one side, and a generous study to the other.

The terracotta-tiled fitted kitchen has a large Aga and ample space for a breakfast table.

The Queen Anne drawing room, added c1700, has elegant full-height sash windows with fitted shutters, an original Adam fireplace, high ceilings and magnificent views of the Cathedral.

The walled gardens are at either side of the house with views of both the castle and the cathedral. They have been sensitively replanted and redesigned by the present owners and are home to a variety of mature trees.
