A terraced house was severely damaged by smoke and flames on Sunday afternoon.

Crews from Medway and Strood fire stations were called to Brompton Lane, Strood, shortly after 3.30pm, following reports of smoke billowing from a house.

Police closed the road between Gun Lane and Glanville Street as fire crews fought to put out the flames.

It is not thought there was anyone in the building at the time.

An eyewitness described seeing thick black smoke and flames coming from the house.

The fire is thought to have started on the ground floor. Fire crews were seen to drag smouldering furniture from the house including a severely charred sofa.
