The Ministry of Defence has selected the people behind Bluewater to start the redevelopment of Chattenden Barracks as Medway’s sixth town.

The Land Securities Group beat off competition from a partnership of John Laing and Gladedale, and the council’s own partners, St Modwen, to win the contract for delivering more than 5,000 homes, jobs and green transport links on the 700-acre former barracks site.

The deal also includes Lodge Hill and some neighbouring training areas.

It does not include the Wainscott training area which has just been given planning permission next to a major nightingale breeding area at Great Chattenden Wood.
