A man was left "astounded" after trying – and failing – to hand a knife he found in his back garden to police.

Mark Justice, who lives in East Malling, thinks the 10-inch blade was thrown into his property by youths previously seen playing around with knives.

However, when he tried to hand the knife into a police office, he was told they did not want it.

Mr Justice said: "I was astounded. You hear all this concern about knife crime and how important it is to get them off the streets.

"But when I tried to hand it in at the West Malling police office, the woman behind the counter didn't want to know.

"She told me to keep it and said she would get an officer to ring me. Needless to say, no one did."

He added: "I hate to think what would have happened had anyone been in my garden at the time."
