Bogus caller steals £600 from pensioner

A bogus caller conned a pensioner into letting him into his home and then stole £600.

The theft happened on Tuesday morning in Jersey Road, Strood, when a man in his 40s called at the 86-year old's home.

He said he needed to check his water pipes after reports of problems in the area.

The incident has prompted detectives in Medway to issue advice to pensioners to remain cautious and not to let strangers into their homes.

Detective Inspector Mike Morgan from Medway Police, said: “A distraction burglar, or bogus caller, is usually someone who calls at your home unannounced to distract or lie with the intention of stealing money or valuables.

“Elderly residents in particular are seen as an easy target so are advised to be particularly cautious and neighbours are asked to be aware of activity at elderly neighbour’s properties.”

“Offenders posing as members of the water board is a common tactic.

“They often look genuine by wearing a fluorescent jacket and carrying a toolbox. You should always ask to see some form of identification before letting anyone into your home.

“Safety chains are also available from Kent Police so you can open your door securely.”

If anyone has any information about this crime they are asked to call Medway Police on 01634 792055 or CrimeStoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
