Canterbury were on the receiving end of a 58-17 rout on Saturday as opponents Clifton avenged the a heavy defeat inflicted on them earlier this season.

Clifton were beaten 51-17 by Canterbury in their previous encounter in National League 2 South but roles were reversed this time around as the hosts ran in 10 tries.

The visiting City side gave away possession too frequently and it cost them a trio of tries in the opening twenty minutes.

Canterbury were getting some joy from the scrummage, where their front-row had the edge, with their disruptive work allowing Peter Kelly to score their only try of the first half.

Clifton had bagged 31 points themselves and a sixth try at the start of the second half extended the home side’s lead.

A yellow card for Kelly was a further blow in the final stages but, as Clifton took their foot off the gas, it allowed wing Will Alkin and skipper Rob Keir to score tries of their own, while a good touchline conversion from Gert De Kock completed the scoring.
