Closure date set for Co-op store

A DEPARTMENT store in Gillingham will close its doors for the last time next month.

The Co-op store in Gillingham’s High Street will cease trading on Saturday, February 11, with the loss of 33 jobs. Store manager David Tyler said: “It’s devastating news.”

The closure is the latest blow for the town centre which has been steadily declining.

The Co-operative Group announced its decision to shut its stores in October last year, after announcing a loss of more than £4 million in 2004. Co-op stores in Strood and Chatham are also expected to close this year.
