A sign promoting cut price fish and chips with the words 'Oh My Cod’ has been branded as tasteless.

Church-goer Christine Inskip said she complained to Tenterden Town Council and Ashford Borough Council about the banner, which was at the front of Del’s Fish Bar in St Michael’s.

"I thought it was tasteless, especially over Easter," she said. "It is advertising fish and chips for £2.99."

The sign has been moved to a hoarding at the side of the parade of shops.

But fish bar owner Del Athwal (pictured left) said no one had complained to him about the banner.

"It was originally across the front of the bar but someone moved it to the hoarding," he said.

"I was not asked to move it and no one has complained to me.

"I don’t agree it is tasteless. There are lots of fish and chip shops called that – I am not going to take it down."

A spokesman for Tenterden Town Council confirmed that a complaint had been received but by the time an officer went to look, the sign had been moved to the hoarding.

She added: "We advised the lady to contact ABC planning department as she said the banner was really large. We weren’t able to comment on whether it was offensive or not."
