Dangers of carrying air guns in public

REAL OR NOT: Sgt Etheridge says BB guns can look like the real thing
REAL OR NOT: Sgt Etheridge says BB guns can look like the real thing

PEOPLE who carry realistic-looking BB guns in public places are risking a confrontation with armed police officers, Kent Police have warned.

In recent months police officers in Thanet have received numerous reports of people carrying and using soft air guns and imitation firearms in the area.

Although none have sparked an armed police call out, local police officers are concerned that someone may get hurt or killed in the future.

“The number of reports we have been receiving of people carrying and using soft air guns and imitation firearms in public is very concerning,” said Sergeant Gordon Etheridge.

“Most soft air guns are not toys. They can cause serious injury when fired at people and could be mistaken by the public and police officers for real guns, and in serious cases could spark a confrontation with armed police officers.

“Armed police officers are highly trained and skilled people, but some soft air guns and imitation firearms are so realistic looking that even they struggle to tell the difference between them and a real firearm.”

Sergeant Etheridge said parents should think twice about allowing their children to use soft air guns – for both the child and public’s safety.

“There is no plausible reason for anybody to be carrying these guns in public. They cause fear, particularly in the current climate.”

He said the purchase of soft air guns is legal, however carrying and using air guns in public is not allowed.

“Air guns are classed as firearms under the law and carrying one in public could get you up to five years' imprisonment.”
