COUNCIL chiefs have postponed a decision on plans to build the UK's first coal-fired power station for nearly 30 years.

E.ON UK sought permission from Medway Council on Thursday night to build two new coal units and demolish the existing power station at Kingsnorth, near Rochester.

The decision to recommend approval to ministers was deferred to allow a site visit to take place.

Almost 9,000 people have objected to the plans, with Greenpeace saying the power station is "dinosaur technology".
