A diesel spillage caused chaos for commuters on some of Kent's busiest roads on Thursday.

Police were called to the Maidstone-bound carriageway of the A249 between the Three Squirrels pub and Detling at around 5.40am after a large amount of diesel spilled from a lorry.

Gritting lorries were sent to the scene to help clear up the spillage.

Drivers were urged to avoid using the A249 at junction 5 of the M2 and to instead use the A2 and the A229 Blue Bell Hill.

Police confirmed at 1pm that the road had reopened.

Although lane one of the carriageway remained closed from Stockbury, traffic was flowing freely, according to a police spokesman.
