An 89-year-old man had to be rescued from the hard shoulder of a motorway after he took a wrong turn on his electric mobility scooter.

The pensioner was spotted on the M20 at Cheriton on Tuesday afternoon, travelling at just 8mph, as cars, lorries and coaches roared past him at 70mph.

Shocked motorists called the police, fearing for the man’s and other drivers’ safety.
