Only 35% of drivers in Kent pass their driving test first time

Almost everyone will have to learn how to drive at some point whether they’re a natural or find it a little harder to get the hang of than expected.

But across the county it looks like drivers are not very likely to get their licence as soon as they’d like.

Figures obtained from the DVLA after a Freedom of Information request show only a little more than a third of people taking their test in Kent pass on their first attempt.

In 2015-2016, only 35% of drivers passed their practical test first time round and some test centres even came below this figure.

For example Herne Bay has the county’s lowest score with 28% of first time passes, closely followed by Folkestone.

Canterbury and Gillingham both fall just under the county average with first timers accounting for 34% of drivers tested.

The most successful test centres for first time passes are Ashford with 39% and Sevenoaks with 37%.

Mark Snowden has been a driving instructor for more than 20 years.

He works for the A-Class Driving School in the Medway area and says one of the reasons tests are getting harder is because of the amount of traffic on the roads.

He said: “The thing that really makes the test harder isn’t really so much the test, it’s the other traffic on the road all the time that you’re dealing with.

“There’s more and more cars on the road, more and more cars parked on the side of the road so it just becomes more difficult to negotiate.

“Some people will take a number of tests before they pass, granted the majority pass at the first or second time but I have had people go as far as 12 tests unbelievably.

“I’m a little bit surprised that 35% of all tests are a first time pass but I think nationally pass rates are about 50%, it will vary from test centre to test centre anyway.”

From April 2015 to March 2016, the DVLA recorded 27,745 people taking a driving test in Kent with 9,884 of them successful first time. A further 5,240 passed on their second attempt.
