The prisoner who escaped a Kent jail was a murderer who stabbed a teacher to death, it has emerged.

Jamie Frater, 38, was a detainee at Blantyre House Open Prison, in Goudhurst, when he failed to return following work in the community.

He handed himself into police in Dorset last night after three days on the run.

A massive manhunt was launched after Frater disappeared from a charity shop in Headcorn at 10am on Monday.

He had been convicted in 1993 for murdering 45-year-old Geoffrey du Rose and jailed for life.

Shockingly, he was just 19 when he stole cigarettes from a shop in Bournemouth, Dorset, and tragic Geoffrey attempted to apprehend him.

Frater, who was high on lighter fluid, stabbed the courageous father-of-two with a 14.5cm blade.

He then kidnapped local resident Cheryl Thompson and forced her to drive across three counties before finally being arrested at gunpoint in Wiltshire.

Frater later told police he had attacked Geoffrey, who was a popular PE teacher, because: "He tried to be a hero."

It is the second time Frater has gone on the run from prison after disappearing from Leyhill Open Prison near Bristol in May 2001 - just two months after being transferred from a more secure unit.

Frater handed himself in to Poole police station at 11.30pm on Thursday after contacting his family.

He is expected to be transferred back to Kent and returned to prison later today.
