Estate residents call for travellers to be moved on

Travellers who moved on to Strood estate a month ago have now been joined by an even larger group.

Angry residents in Kingswear Gardens are calling for action to move the travellers and their caravans on.

One resident, who didn’t want to be named, said: “I’m disgusted nothing has been done.

"Not only that - I was shocked to see more turn up this morning and the police were just up the road observing. They didn’t do anything to stop them from setting up home here.”

The first group is thought to have moved to Kingswear Gardens after being evicted from a site in Bath Hard Lane, Rochester.

On Tuesday morning, eight more caravans and their towing vehicles arrived in Kingswear Gardens. They are camped on the estate car park, which is surrounded by empty boarded-up houses.

A Medway Council spokesman said: "Medway Council is aware of a new group of travellers that have moved on to land at Canal Road, Strood. The council is responsible for removing travellers from its own land but because this group is not on council owned land, Medway Council has no powers to remove them. Officers of the council have been in touch with the landowners to offer advice and believe that relevant action is being taken."
