Around forty firefighters have been tackling a major blaze at a home in Broadstairs.

Crews were sent to the large detached property in Lanthorne Road just before 12.30pm Tuesday, after a passer-by spotted smoke pouring from the roof.

At the fire's height, six fire appliances from Whitstable, Ramsgate, Margate, Eastry and Sturry, an aerial appliance and a command support unit attended the incident.

The first crews on the scene fought extremely hard to confine the fire to one area of the roof and prevent it from spreading through the entire void.

While one team of firefighters wearing safe access equipment tackled the fire in the roof, crews in breathing entered the building and carried out a salvage operation on the ground and first floor.

A cat, suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation, was found, rescued and given oxygen. It is thought to be fine, but has been taken to a vet as a precaution.

The incident was scaled down to three fire appliances at 2.15pm and tactical firefighting operations ceased half an hour later.

Firefighters are now checking for and extinguishing any hotspots and ventilating the heavily smoke-logged home.

This follows an earlier incident in Ramsgate in which four fire engines and an aerial appliance fought a roof fire.
