Gillingham assistant manager Ian Hendon has hinted that midfielder Jack Payne could be due a rest.

The 18-year-old has been an ever-present in the Gills team this season and played every minute of every game in the last month.

Hendon knows, however, that they don’t want to over use the promising teenager.

He said: "Jack has pretty much played every minute this season and there might be a case, and I’m not saying there is, to give him a breather at some point.

"I’m not saying it will happen – I’m saying it could happen."

Payne (pictured) is central to most things Gillingham do, including their long throw-ins, and he got some extra help during Tuesday's night goalless draw against Southend at Priestfield with a number of towels placed around the pitch to help him dry the ball.

How important is Jack Payne to Gillingham's line-up? Have your say below.
