Andy Hessenthaler felt the loss of Charlie Lee through injury was a big blow to their chances of taking maximum points at Macclesfield.

Lee was creating problems as an attacking force from his right-back position but succumbed to a dead leg in the second half.

Gillingham boss Hessenthaler said: "Charlie was getting a lot of space in the second half going forward. But he picked up an injury in the first half and couldn’t shake it off.

"It’s a shame. (His injury) hampered us going forward because of the runs he made. He was getting on the ball more and more."

Lee also picked up his ninth caution of the season on Saturday and is now one booking away from an automatic two-match ban.

*Meanwhile, non-league hot-shot Sam Newson was stretchered off at the weekend on the eve of a trial with Gillingham.

Newson, who has already bagged 32 goals this season, was expected to start a week-long trial with the Gills on Monday. The 23-year-old Needham Market astriker suffered a knee injury in the 1-0 home defeat to Chatham.
