Simon King believes he could be fit for the start of the League 2 season after starting a new rehab programme.

The Gillingham defender, pictured, didn’t kick a ball last season because of an ankle injury and has turned to former West Ham physio John Green in an attempt to speed up his recovery.

Green is highly regarded for his ankle treatment work and is already working with out-of-contract Gills defender Garry Richards.

"He’s worked with some top players previously in the Premiership," said King. "It’s a different opinion and he might help me out.

"I’ll be given a programme to work with and that will take me into the first few weeks of July. Hopefully then I can join the boys for pre-season."

King played through the pain of a damaged ankle throughout the 2008-09 season but a twist in a pre-season friendly at Bromley left him sidelined. He was due for rehabilitation in Dubai, but that has been put on hold until the Gills appoint a full-time physio.
