Gills fans had reason to celebrate when a 1-0 victory over Burton gave them their second successive home win of the season. Here's what our panel of fans had to say about the result.

ALEX SARSON

(Wellingborough)

"A tough game that was literally fought for throughout. Burton did not stop complaining and diving throughout, and the officials made for a stop-start style affair.

"I was very happy for Cody McDonald to get his first goal for us and he seemed to grow in strides throughout the second half.

"Bruce Inkango also looked good and almost got us a Brucey Bonus towards the end. Burton’s Moore should have been sent off for a nasty stamp on Inkango, but the referee and linesman both missed it.

"Happy with three points but another three won’t hurt at all on Tuesday night."

PAUL BLAKELEY

(Maidstone)

"A tricky game against a side reasonably well placed in the league was not helped by our dreadful start.

"The tempo Hess wanted us to start with was completely absent and we were second best in the first half. Still, we picked up in the second half and Cody looked lively and could have had a couple more goals.

"I’m pleased to see Hess reacting with decent subs – taking off the ineffective Weston and then bringing on Inkango. He looks a decent addition and could be handy. It was also pleasing to see Cronin (pictured) make some good saves.

"A good result versus Southend will hopefully inject the dose of confidence we need to really kick on."

MELISSA GUTHRIE

(Rochester)

"The absence of Barcham (injured) and Palmer (used at left back this week) in midfield was clearly evident but especially in the first half.

"A lack of pace and little link-up play through the midfield made for a less than scintillating first 45 minutes.

"Hess’ half-time talk must have had an impact. The second half was much more encouraging with less use of the long ball. McDonald’s goal was well taken and will hopefully bring him the confidence to start scoring regularly. After his goal he looked more lively.

"Bruce Inkango’s (pictured) performance has given me hope for good things to come. For a small player, he held the ball up well and never looked rushed or flustered. He also showed a good bit of skill in the few minutes he was on the pitch.

"The win against Burton was a scrappy one but three points are three points. I’m definitely a happy fan."

LIAM BATCH

(Ashford)

"Andy Hessenthaler stated that it was an ugly win, but after a struggling start to the season, I am more than happy with a scrappy 1-0 victory.

"Hopefully this sort of win can raise the spirit within the club and help us go on a much-needed patch of form to force ourselves up the table.

"With Cody McDonald bagging his first, I believe that he will take confidence from this and go on to score a significant amount over the course of the season.

"Leaving Bradford in the distant memory, we must press on and play without fear. Gaining a second win in a row against Southend could prove vital and see us going on a winning streak."

SAM LIVINGSTONE

(Pangbourne)

"Although I thought that the match was very scrappy and of a fairly poor quality, I did not care at all! We battled very well and I was delighted to see Cody MacDonald getting off the mark.

"Akinfenwa (pictured) and Cody were excellent as was Jack Payne and the whole of defence. I now just hope that we can go and get three points on Tuesday and then I will have real belief that we can get back into the promotion race. Cody’s goal should take some of the pressure of Ade also as he is now not the only goal scorer! All in all a vital three points."

JULIAN HART

(Canterbury)

"Saturday's performance was pretty dire, but to grind out a 1-0 win and take three points I'll put up with it. It was nice to see Cody Macdonald get a goal and hopefully it will be a kick start for more to come. The defence at times on looked weak and had many fans' hearts in their mouths.

A better performance is needed against Accrington but I do feel this could be the first away win we are looking for."

BURTON FAN

Ian Hawkins

"A cliché it may be but that was truly a game of two halves. Burton had some great chances in the first half, mostly through Shaun Harrad, although Richard Walker’s header was, I am reliably informed, over the line in the first half. That may have made a big difference to the outcome.

"Gillingham scored five minutes into the second half and grew in confidence from that whereas Burton, unusually, were lacklustre in fighting back.

"In some ways the game shows how much Burton have progressed since coming into the Football League. Last season we would have happily taken a draw at Priestfield in the FA Cup but this season there is disappointment at not winning."
