Gillingham have tabled an improved offer for an unnamed League 1 striker, who manager Mark Stimson has made his number one target.

The Gills boss is keeping the player’s identity to himself and he’s hoping the new bid will prove successful.

"Hopefully that might make the difference," said Stimson.

"If that’s rejected and they say what they’re looking for is totally out of our reach then we’ll go in for someone else.

"We would love to have him to take to France at the weekend."

A popular arrival at Priestfield would be Charlton striker Chris Dickson.

Stimson hasn’t hidden his admiration of the striker, who netted 11 goals for the Gills during a loan spell last time the club were in League 1. However, the Addicks may be reluctant to lose a player who has netted three times in pre-season.

Stimson, meanwhile, has given up on attempts to bring Dagenham striker Paul Benson to Priestfield.

"I think Dagenham have stated the money they want and it’s something we’re not going to get involved in," said the Gills boss. "We’ve moved on."

While talk centres on Stimson’s striker hunt, the manager has hinted that he may also be ready to bring in one more key player before his summer spending ends.

"We definitely need one striker and there maybe another twist in there if we can do it," he said.

"We’ve been working on a few things throughout the summer and one or two things are coming to the fore now so they might happen."
