Tony Sinclair is heading the list of players who have been on trial at Gillingham for the past week.

The 25-year-old former Woking and Welling defender, pictured, was at Priestfield as a youngster and has made a big impression on Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler.

Although at fault for Braintree’s first goal in the 2-1 defeat on Friday when he didn’t hear Alan Julian’s call and headed the ball past the Gills keeper, Sinclair’s response has pleased the Gillingham manager.

"I like Tony Sinclair, he hasn’t done himself any harm," admitted Hessenthaler.

"He can play right-back as well where we haven’t got much cover for Barry Fuller so I think Tony could be an option.

"He has got a very good leap on him, is very athletic and is something we haven’t really got at the back."

As for the mix-up at Braintree, Hessenthaler was putting that down to nerves.

"He was nervous and I think we saw against Bromley how much he improved," he said.

"Once he got the mistake out of the way (at Braintree), he got better as the game went on. He started the Bromley game well and they didn’t cause us a problem.

"I’m not going to make a decision yet but I like what I’ve seen so far."
