Gillingham suffered a 2-0 defeat in their Combination League match on Wednesday at home to QPR.

Gills manager Mark Stimson named a strong side to face the R’s second string at Priestfield.

Mark Bentley captained the side alongside senior pros such as Kevin Maher, Chris Palmer, James Walker and former Rangers keeper Simon Royce.

Rangers took the lead through Danny Davenport early in the second half.

Gillingham’s best chance of the opening half fell to Bentley, pictured, but he could only divert Chris Palmer’s corner into the hands of the visiting keeper.

QPR doubled the lead when Royce’s free-kick fell to the feet of Josh Parker and he netted despite the Gillingham keeper’s best efforts of making amends.

In-between that error Royce did make two good blocks from Angelo Balanta.

Luis Cumbers made a second half appearance and he had a powerful effort beaten away by keeper Shane McWeeney.

Gillingham: Royce, Payne, Palmer, Davies, Wynter, Fisher (Evans), Bentley, Maher, Walker (Cumbers), Yussuff, Joseph. Subs: Hawkes, Brunt, Benniman.

QPR: McWeeney, Volz, Waters, Oastler (Ehmer), Olley, Brown, Alberti (Bewick), Davenport (Hibbert), Rose, Parker, Balanta. Subs: Putnins.
