Adebayo Akinfenwa will not celebrate if he scores against Northampton on Saturday but admits he will not be holding back against his former club, either.

The striker, pictured, has been pushing hard in training in a bid to shake off injury so he can be fit to help Gillingham at a ground where he enjoyed many happy afternoons.

Akinfenwa netted 37 league goals from 78 starts during his time with the Cobblers but ended a two-and-a-half-year stay at Sixfields in the summer.

He said: "Northampton was one of my most enjoyable football experiences and my best goalscoring return. I still have a lot of friends there.

"I have a good record of scoring against my previous clubs and if that can continue, then I’ll be happy.

"I don’t think I would celebrate a goal just because of the respect I have for the fans."

Is Akinfenwa the man to end Gillingham's dismal away record this weekend? Have your say in our comments section below.
