Great expectations for Dickens walk

A bracing walk with a literary edge is promised tomorrow as part of the Dickens celebrations.

The eight-mile linear walk from Sole Street promises to blow away the cobwebs and add to walkers' Dickens experiences (for details, see below).

Organised by Geoff Rambler, and supported by the KM Group, it is the second in a series of walks celebrating the great author's Kent haunts.

On Tuesday, three generations of the Hird family joined the KM Group Dickens Walk across the Kent marshes.

Peter Hird, from Battersea, read about the walk in the Dickens 2012 supplement when visitng his daughter Felicity's home in Sole Street, near Gravesend.

Father, daughter and baby George met Geoff Rambler and other KM Group readers at the Fenn Bill Inn, at Allhallows, to make the most of the bright sunshine.

The walkers came from across the county including Faversham, Medway and Doddington to join Geoff Rambler, who led them across the snow-covered St Mary's marshes to St Mary's Bay, before walking on to Egypt Bay, where the prison hulk that Magwitch escaped from was anchored.

He said: "today the marshes were at their most beautiful. bird son was so clear in the cold crisp air and we got a real sense of isolation as we found our way through virgin snow.

"The bowl of soup by a log fire at the end finished our walk perfectly"

  • The next KM Group Dickens walk with Geoff Rambler is tomorrow, February 12, at 11.45am. It is an eight-mile linear walk from Sole Street Station.
  • On Sunday, February 19, a 4.5 mile walk starts from the Leather Bottle, Cobham, at 9.45am. Everyone is welcome and the walks are free to join.

A volunatry donation to the Swiss Chalet repairs fund can be made at the end of the walk. See Geoff Rambler's website for details and walk updates in the event of snow, or get a copy of Dickens: A Love Affair with Kent by emailing levans@thekmgroup.co.uk
