Thousands of homes in Kent were without power on Tuesday after two power stations shutdown within minutes of each other.

Homes in Whitstable and Herne Bay were without power for about an hour from 11.30am on Tuesday morning.

The two power stations, which came off the National Grid simultaneously were Sizewell B nuclear power station in Suffolk and Longannet power station in Fife, Scotland.

A National Grid spokesman said: “The system operated is designed to protect the majority of UK electricity demand, by automatically disconnecting a small proportion of demand to bring frequency back to safe operating levels.”

Power has since been restored to all EDF Energy customers in Kent.
