THE NEW year has brought a prestigious commendation for a former Kent mayor.

Former Gravesham councillor Frank Marven has appeared on the New Year’s Honours list.

The 79-year-old will be receiving an MBE for his services to the community, after 37 years as a councillor and for his role within the scout movement.

Mr Marven, pictured, who lives in Chalky Bank, had no idea he would be receiving the grand honour until recently.

He said: “It was a very pleasant surprise. I was born in Gravesend. It means everything to me. I am very honoured and glad that I have been able to serve the community.”

Mr Marven was elected to the council in 1970 for Pelham ward, and Woodlands ward in 1976 until 1995.

He was member for Shorne, Cobham and Luddesdown from 1995 to 2007, when he retired from the council, and was awarded Freeman of the Borough in May this year. The father of two was also Mayor of Gravesham from 1982 to 1983.

A council spokesman said: “We’re delighted that his work has been recognised. It is richly deserved.”

Mr Marven, who joined the scouts at 11, is now a vice president of the Gravesend Scout Association.
