Staff at hospitals in East Kent will have to work a normal day for no extra pay on the day of the royal wedding, it has emerged.

Bosses at the NHS Eastern and Coastal Kent said staff will be expected to work a normal day despite the government confirming that the nuptials of Kate and Wills now being classed as a bank holiday.

Health chiefs say that it would cost the trust over £1 million in extra pay as workers normally receive time and a half for bank holiday working - that figure equates to more than 16,000 hip operations.

However, trade union Unison said it was "only fair" to pay nurses and hospital staff a little bit extra.

A spokesman said: "It's been declared a public holiday and they will be missing out on celebrations across the country and with friends and family."

What do you think? Should staff be paid extra, or get a day off for the royal wedding? If so, who should foot the bill? Is your boss "cancelling" the bank holiday? Join the debate below.
